THE ONLY SMART WAY OF SEEING THE NEW YEAR IN - SOCIETY'S NEW LAW: &quotAULD LANG SYNE" AT THE SAVOY RESTAURANT.

A thousand guests sat down to supper at the Savoy on New Year's Eve and saw the New Year in amid a scene of boisterous enthusiasm. A choir of boys sang &quotRule, Britannia." and after midnight struck the company at all the tables joined hands round the room and sang &quotAuld Lang Syne." Everything is now being transferred to the restaurant, and even the New Year's Eve ceremonies, once domestic of the domestic, are celebrated in public.

Scene from The Illustrated London News - Saturday, January 5, 1907 (No. 3533, vol. THE WORLD'S LARGEST DIAMOND
Most highly-prized of all precious stones, diamonds consist of pure crystalized carbon. One of the chief sources is the South African mines - steeply-walled volcanic &quotpipes" filled with broken-up masses of bluish -green rock known as &quotblue ground". The famous Cullinan stone, discovered near Pretoria in 1905 and presented to King Edward VII in 1907, was the size of a turkey's egg and weighed in its uncut state 3,025 carats. From it were cut nine large diamonds (now part of the Crown Jewels) and 96 small brillants. We illustrate the stone in the rough, and also the largest of the cut diamonds, mounted in the Royal Sceptre.

It is an extraordinary piece of engineering and the slopes of the curves have been so cleverly calculated that an unsteered car travelling at ninety miles an hour would run on the top of the slope with perfect safety : the analogy is that of a pea revolving in a bowl Each lap of the course measures 3½ miles
&quotWhere motors fly like peas in a bowl : the Wonderful sloping sides of the Motor Track at Weybridge"
Total cost (nearly): £100,000
Concrete track and bridges: 35,000 cubic yards
Length road track: 3 miles
Earthwork shifted (including roads)
Width of track: 90 feet
Two bridges over River Wey: £10,000
Over a nine month period over seven hundred men worked virtually round the clock, seven days a week, the only breaks being on Saturday and Sunday nights. The work involved diverting the river Wey, re-housing smallholders, the felling of thirty acres of woodland and the moving of 350,000 cubic yards of earth. Seven miles of rail track was laid and 200,000 tons of gravel and cement were brought in and cast to make the race track. The circuit had its official opening on June 17th, 1907.
