Abseilers clean one of the faces of the Big Ben clock on the tower of the Houses of Parliament in London. The tower was completed in the 1850s, and is 316 feet tall. *...The four dials of the clock, last cleaned in 1995, are 23 feet square and have 312 panes on each face; the minute hand is 14 feet long and the figures are 2 feet high. The clock takes its name from Big Ben, the bell inside the tower whose chimes are known around the world. 25/03/02 : The hands of Britain's most famous clock could grind to a halt because of a row over its cleaning and maintenance, it emerged. Big Ben is due to be given its twice-yearly overhaul this weekend when the clocks go forward from Greenwich Meantime to British Summer Time. But a dispute between the private contractor responsible for the giant timepiece's upkeep and the Palace of Westminster could mean the spring clean will not go ahead. Mervyn Lee, a director at clockmakers Thwaites & Reed, said the company had been in the process of renegotiating its contract with the Sergeants-At-Arms, who are responsible for the daily management of Westminster. However, they were then told that two of their expert clockmakers had been recruited, without the company's knowledge, he claimed.

Big Ben viewed from the direction of the London Eye, South Bank, London. View of the famous clock tower of the Palace of Westminster which houses the clock and 13-ton bell known as Big Ben. The clock, designed by Sir Edmund Beckett, and bell are named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was Commissioner of Works at the time of their installation in 1859. Designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield, the London Eye was built for the Millenium celebrations in 2000. The 135 metre high rotating wheel has 32 enclosed observation capsules from within which people can enjoy panoramic views of London. Although the wheel was officially opened on 31 December 1999, technical problems meant that it was not opened to the public until March 2000, since when it has become one of London's most popular tourist attractions. <br>Credit: Spectrum Colour Library / HIP / TopFoto
