ETERNAL YOUTH - an ancient idea.<br>The philospher's stone, 1582. The stone is shown within a gilded niche containing a child which bellows an unseen fire beneath the phoenix who embodies rebirth and longevity. Above the niche a man is in a chariot drawn by two mythical creatures. The surrounding scenes show country life including men getting water from a well, tanning leather and ploughing. Visible in the far distance on the right is a scene of a mass hanging. On the left is a funeral procession. Both scenes in contrast with the stone's eternal life. Also on the left a man gives money to two crippled beggars. The legendary philosopher's stone was an important aspect of alchemy in the 16th century. Its supposed properties included use as a catalyst in the process of turning base metals into gold, and as a youth elixir. Some, including the alchemist Nicolas Flamel, believed it to give the power of immortality. From a book on the Philospher's Stone, referred to as the &quotSplendor Solis".
