0818785 - Atoms for peace progress: The successful use of atomic energy to extend storage life of potatoes is shown by the contrast between unsprouted potatoes, lower row, subjected to varying doses of gamma rays 16 months before this photograph was made, and sprouted potatoes upper row, of the same age which were not treated. Treated potatoes do not retain any radioactivity, but they do retain the original taste and nutritional value for long periods of time. A mobile trailer truck that can be moved into potato fields has been designed to treat newly dug crops.
