1917 Ross Sea Party<br>A boat was lowered for the shore, ringing cheers greeted its approach, a terrible chapter in the men's lives was drawing to a close, rescue boat approaching Elephant Island.<br>After his legendary ordeal in the Weddell Sea sector, Ernest Shackleton arrived in New Zealand during December 1916. He was advised that his supply team the Ross Sea Party was stranded in Antarctica. By that time the Aurora had been repaired and after discussion with the Aurora's captain, Shackleton immediately sailed to Ross Island to bring his men home. On January 10, 1917, the ship pulled alongside the pack ice near Cape Royds and worked its way to Cape Evans. One week later, Shackleton and the Ross Sea Party survivors were headed back to Wellington, New Zealand.

American helicopter pilots from a U.S. Icebreaker in Antarctic waters are said to have taken a number of Souvenirs from the historic Antarctic huts of Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton.<br>The pilots flew to the 50-year-old huts, about 20 miles apart on Ross Island, to say prayers. They returned with Mementoes: A few scraps of wood found outside Scott's hut, and a bottle of medicine form inside Shackleton's hut. <br>Officials of the operation &quotDeep Freeze" have issued strict orders that nothing must be moved from the huts by visiting Americans.<br>Photo shows: Shackleton's hut as it looked in 1911, when used by members of the Scott expedition. The hut was built during Shackleton's 1908 expedition.<br>23 December 1955    <br>

  South Georgia. Drifting snow over abandoned whaling station. Husvik, Stromness Bay. September 1988. Shackleton left from this station to recover his colleagues who accompanied him on his epic voyage to South Georgia from Elephant Island. The whaling station was owned and operated by the Norwegian company, Tonsberg from about 1905 until 1960. This company was given a lisenced to operate by the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands which is still responsible for the islands. The islands are protectorates of the UK.<br>The photograph shows the main fuel tanks for the station which is almost lost in the blowing snow. This is a late winter scene. Behind the station are some of the mountain peaks of South Georgia.
