1978 Portrait by John Hedgecoe - Stephen Hawking - scientist - Stephen William Hawking CH, CBE, FRS, (born 8 January 1942), is considered one of the world's leading theoretical physicists. Hawking is the Lucasian Professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge (a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton), and a fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Despite enduring severe disability and, of late, being rendered quadriplegic by motor neurone disease (specifically, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease), he has had a successful career for many years, and has achieved status as an academic celebrity.

Pictured here with his first wife Jane and children Robert and Lucy
©2006 John Hedgecoe/TopFoto

USA Florida -- 26 Apr 2007 -- Noted physicist Stephen Hawking (center) enjoys zero gravity during a flight aboard a modified Boeing 727 aircraft owned by Zero Gravity Corporation (Zero G) - a commercial company licensed to provide the public with weightless flight experiences. Hawking developed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis disease in the 1960s, a type of motor-neuron disease which would cost him the loss of almost all neuromuscular control. At the celebration of his 65th birthday on the 8th January this year, Hawking announced his plans for a zero-gravity flight to prepare for a sub-orbital space flight in 2009 on Virgin Galactic's space service. Hawking stayed weightless during several dives in the aircraft -- Picture by Kim Shiflett / Lightroom Photos / NASA
