A first edition of JRR Tolkien's Hobbit has smashed world records at auction after being sold for a staggering £60,000.
The prized inscribed edition was snapped up by a mysterious telephone bidder at auction today - for twice what experts had predicted.
The figure is the highest ever amount paid at auction for an inscribed first edition of the book which he gave to friend Elaine Griffiths after she persuaded him to get it published.
