0237509 - Alamogordo, New Mexico. Major General Leslie R Groves (right), Chief of Manhattan Engineering District in which first Atomic Bomb was developed and Dr J R Oppenheimer, Director of Los Alamos Atomic Bomb Project and Physicist at California Technological Institute, view the base of the steel tower on which first Atomic Bomb hung when tested near here in 1945. The intense heat of the bomb melted the tower and seared he surrounding sands into jade green glasslike cinders. 30th July 1965.
