To the cheers of a huge crowd in Rome, Bikila Abebe of Ethopia (11) runs barefooted up to the finishing line to win the 26 mile marathon of the 1960 Olympic games, in a record time of 2 hours 15 minutes 16.2 seconds.
He was closely followed by Abdesian Rhadi of Morocco (185). The two had been the only ones in the race with a chance of winning on the halfway mark 
10th September 1960.
