Lincoln, statue of Tennyson - Alfred, 1st Baron Tennyson 1809-1892. English poet, poet laureate 1850-1892, whose verse has a majestic, musical quality. His works include The Lady of Shalott; The Lotus Eaters; Ulysses; Break, Break, Break; The Charge of the Light Brigade; the longer narratives Locksley Hall 1832 and Maud 1855; the elegy In Memoriam 1850; and a long series of poems on the Arthurian legends The Idylls of the King 1857-1885. Tennyson was born at Somersby, Lincolnshire. The death of A H Hallam (a close friend during his years at Cambridge) 1833 prompted the elegiac In Memoriam, unpublished until 1850, the year in which he succeeded Wordsworth as poet laureate and married Emily Sellwood.

Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson (6 August 1809 - 6 October 1892) was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and is one of the most popular English poets.  Tennyson wrote a number of phrases that have become commonplaces of the English language, including: &quotnature, red in tooth and claw", &quotbetter to have loved and lost", &quotTheirs not to reason why,/Theirs but to do and die", and &quotMy strength is as the strength of ten,/Because my heart is pure".
