The waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans was opened on 7th January 1914, afer many crude attempts, a stream of broken treaties and the deaths of many men. The canal is considered one of the engineering wonders of the world. This photo shows what Panama's Big Ditch looked like in December 1904 during excavation of Gaillard Cut.
