Panama Canal, Central America. 1957. Pedro Miguel Locks. Water rushes out of the Pacific side of the Pedro Miguel Locks as the gates are opened. A plan has been advanced for a completely new sea-level canal which would almost eliminate leaks. The cost of the deep excavation is estimated to be 5 billion dollars and the work may take ten years.
